This presentation first deals with the background on the cocoa industry and looks at its future. Problems and challenges encountered are discussed, e.g on the economic side: low production, crop losses, pests and diseases, inadequate infrastructure and land-use planning, poor market information systems, absence of crop diversification, etc.. With regard to environmental and social equality issues, weather anomalies and soil fertility and lack of education opportunities, and human diseases are mentioned followed by looking at the positive side of the future cocoa industry with roles for the different stakeholders. The presentation ends with special attention for the role of knowledge.
