The Projet de Production Durable de Cacao Certificié (PPDC) - Market-oriented promotion of certified sustainable cocoa production was a joint public and private sector project aimed to improve the well-being of smallholder cocoa farmers in Ivory Coast. The project encouraged the production of quality cocoa through the application of sustainable agricultural practices according to an internationally accepted standard (the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard). The project ended in March 2009: Almost 6000 farmers were trained and almost 6000 tons of cocoa certified, for which the farmers received a total of 1,2 million US$ as price premiums.
