Business Development Services aim at supporting cocoa producers in reaching the market through services such as training and extension, market information services, technology, legal advice and linking producers to other stakeholders.
There is a growing consensus that growth, profitability and increased competitiveness of small scale producers is the only way out of rural poverty and food insecurity. Along these lines, small scale farmers are increasingly asked to become more market-oriented and more often approached as entrepreneurs in their own right.
But business development services do not automatically reach all farmers. Or, when accessing services is not the problem, benefiting from these services can be challenging. Sustainable service delivery tackles these problems.
