Food security is high on the international agenda. There are different approaches to food security in relation to cocoa production:
The cocoa, as cash crop, can enable cocoa farmers to buy food on the market. Cocoa can also be produced next to other crops to ensure a stable income and as a means of risk mitigation. Another approach is when cocoa producers produce their own food for home consumption next to their cocoa.
Newsflash: The Government of the Netherlands signed its first food security program contract in December 2012. Read more about the project "Food Security and Nutrition Component in the Sustainable Cocoa Production Program (SCPP)".
