With over $6 billion dollars in sales every year, the Hershey Company is one of the world’s largest producers of chocolate and candy products. Hershey’s products are sold in more than 70 countries and include Hershey’s Kisses and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars as well as brands such as Reese’s, Whoppers, Almond Joy, and Twizzlers. Although Hershey strives to be a model company and has several philanthropic, social, and environmental programs, the company has struggled with ethical issues related to the labor issues associated with West African cocoa communities, including child labor. Hershey has developed several initiatives to improve the lives of West African cocoa workers and is involved with a number of organizations that are involved in cocoa communities. However, critics argue that Hershey is not doing enough to stop labor exploitation on cocoa plantations. This case examines some of the issues related to the Hershey Chocolate Company and West African cocoa communities.
