To share, meet and learn for sustainable cocoa

social policies

Social policies and their implementation contribute to a healthy cocoa sector and to rural development.

The working and living conditions in rural areas can be poor. The governments of cocoa producing countries play a major role in improving these conditions, for example through investments in education and in health facilities. Pressure to improve social conditions can also come from international institutes and companies, or from consumers and members of farmer organizations.

Food for thought

Some companies and farmer organizations that are working directly with farmers facilitate farmers' access to health and pension schemes. This is a relatively new development and can benefit both the company, as it links farmers more closely to the company, as well as farmers and their families as it helps them to get access to health care and pension.
