Cocoa alone is no guarantee for attractive livelihoods. Cocoa smallholders are among the rural poor in Africa. According to the Cocoa Livelihood Program of the World Cocoa Foundation, diversified livelihoods should be based on a business approach. It is based on imparting new knowledge and skills to boost self-confidence and encourage a change of behavior. So far, a new Farmer Business School (FBS)curriculum has been developed, 238 trainers and supervisors have been trained provided by 23 public and private partners familiar with the approach, and 17,120 farmers have “graduated” since March 2010. In addition, COCOBOD Ghana has adopted FBS as precursor of technical training for the public-private cocoa extension partnership.
